Lessons Learned: Week 2 of 2019
Author: Dylan Thomas
The second week of the NFL has almost concluded so let’s react to what happened.
1) Don’t Overreact
Davante Adams struggled last week with 7 PPR points. This week he had 17 PPR points and looks great again! We need to be patient as even studs like Davante Adams will have down weeks. With this being said, go try to buy Joe Mixon and Mike Evans IMMEDIATELY. Julio Jones and Dalvin Cook started off slow and were league winners last year, Mixon and Evans can do that too.
2) Maybe regression isn’t coming after all…
Peyton Manning and Tom Brady only averaged 35 TDs after their MVP seasons so Mahomes will regress right….?? Maybe not… he looks insanely good as he lit up the Raiders without Tyreek Hill for 400 yards and 4 TDs. I hate drafting QBs as early as Mahomes was going but owners are going to really enjoy his production so far. He hasn’t fallen off at all. I expect Baltimore to be a lot tougher for him than Oakland but he still looks like his MVP form. His talent is insane and Andy Reid is a wizard.
3) What coaches say matter
Bruce Arians talked highly of Chris Godwin all season and the hype train began rolling out. “He’s going to get 100 catches.” “He’s our number one guy.” The list goes on… On the contrary, this hype train might’ve been true after all. Most “coach speak” is false but Godwin looks insanely good this year. He’s playing more snaps and getting targeted more than Mike Evans through two weeks. Two weeks… so let’s calm down a bit but Arians heavily hinted at us that Godwin will feast. Sean Payton did the same with a rookie Michael Thomas back in 2016. It’s hard to sort the “coach speak” from the “real talk",” but it can create INSANE fantasy values when we get it right!
4) These Rookie Wide Receivers are looking GREAT
Rookie wideouts tend not to produce their rookie years. The NFL is hard to adapt to and adjusting takes time. HOWEVER, Terry McLaurin and Marquise “Hollywood” Brown have been KILLING it! McLaurin has averaged 20 PPR points per game and Brown has averaged 26 through the first two weeks. I don’t expect this pace to continue but they sure as hell are going to be fantasy relevant in their rookie years if they keep this up. Let’s not overreact to two weeks but I’m excited to see if they can continue to produce during the first season in the NFL.
5) Injuries suck
I said this last week and I’ll say it again — nobody can predict injuries and it’s because WE CAN’T because injuries are random. Ben Roethlisberger and Drew Brees are out for a significant amount of time. Big Ben is done for the year and Brees will be out for at least six weeks. Injuries will continue to fluctuate players’ values in fantasy football. We can’t control that. What we can control is how we react to them. Go buy JuJu and Kamara while their stocks are low, they may become league winners at their discounted prices.
That’s all for Week 2! I’m going to keep these very brief and to the point. Remember to follow me on Twitter (@dkthom2018). Feel free to DM any questions you have at all!
